A Guide to Managing Your Oral Health During Cold and Flu Season

When you are sick, it is important to take care of your body including your mouth.

Here are a few ways to take care of your oral health while you are sick:

1. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
Even when you feel under the weather, it’s important to make sure you maintain your routine of brushing and flossing twice a day.

2. Sugar Free Medication
Cough drops and syrups can contain sugar to sweeten the flavour of the medication. You can look for medication that is unsweetened, or be sure to brush and rinse afterwards.

3. Stay Hydrated
You want to drink plenty of water when you are sick to ensure that your body has adequate fluids to fight the infection. You can experience a dry mouth when you can’t breath through your nose, but when you are dehydrated you will produce less saliva as well. Saliva has antibacterial properties, which is why a dry mouth can promote tooth decay and gum disease.

4. Rinse after Vomiting
If you vomit, the result is stomach acid enters your mouth and can do damage to your teeth and gum tissues. Its important to rinse your mouth with water after vomiting. Since acid can damage your teeth, you should brush and floss. Waiting 30 minutes before brushing and flossing will allow time for the acid to neutralize.

5. Discard Toothbrush
When you start feeling better it is time to replace your toothbrush because it can harbor bacteria and re-infect you.
